Shifting Issue Empty Shifting Issue

Post by Jim Sat Jun 06, 2015 2:57 pm

My tranny was getting noisy so I had it checked out. Ended up getting a new clutch and rebuilt Transmission.
With the new rebuilt transmission, the noise was gone, but the clutch seemed mushy and after driving awhile the shifting from 1st to 2nd and back to 1st seemed to need a little extra oomph.
It used to just glide into place. So I decided to research these symptoms on various web sites. My research indicated this is typical when the wrong transmission fluid is used.
I checked my invoice and saw 75/90G gear lube was used. It should have been Mopar #4874464. The 75/90 G is for the AX-5 and AX-15 transmission. In 2000 Jeep replaced the AX with the NV3550. That's what I have in my 2001 Wrangler.
I could have had the transmission people correct the mistake, but I'd rather spend $50 on the 3 quarts of MTF and do it myself, than be without my Jeep for several days.
It took me about an hour. If I hadn't tried to do this B-Grade Video, I could have been done in half the time.
So if any of you are having shifting issues, maybe this video will help you out.
